There are reports that some kids are being bullied in schools for wearing masks. Bullying is not appropriate. Parents can help by showing respect for others, especially in front of their children, leading by example (wearing their masks with their children if they wear masks), and encouraging kids to report bullying experiences to their teachers.

Many parents have reported that their kids have been bullied either for wearing or not wearing masks. Controversies around masks may fuel bullying.

Parents are encouraged to address mask bullying attempts and intentions that they notice and to show respect for others who have different opinions in front of their children. The community of teachers, schools, and other educators (faith-based, after-school, recreational) can help kids learn how to be more than just bystanders by showing and teaching moral engagement and practicing the following: 

1. Intervene immediately to calm the situation. Get another adult to help if needed.

2. Reduce the tension by separating the kids involved. 

3. Make sure everyone is safe. 

4. Respond to any immediate medical or mental health needs. 

5. Model respectful behavior when you intervene. 

Efforts should be made to get police or medical attention immediately when a weapon is involved or serious bodily injury.

It is unclear how common mask bullying is. However, to build a safe and healthy community, no level of bullying is appropriate.
