As of December 5, 230 illnesses, 96 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths have been identified in 38 states, including Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado. Fourteen companies/brands have recalled their cantaloupe products due to salmonella contamination: Malichita, Aldi, Vinyard, Rudy, Kwik Trip, Bix Produce, TGD Cuts, Fresh Guaranteed, RaceTrac, Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joes, Cut Fruit Express, and GHGA. The FDA has warned against eating whole or packaged cut cantaloupe from these brands. Check FDA.gov for a list of recalled cantaloupe products.

As of December 7, there have been 230 illnesses,96 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths due to the outbreaks. In the U.S., cases were reported in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montanna, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. In addition to these states, the items are sold in Florida, and could be sold in additional states.

Those infected with salmonella can experience symptoms including abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. Symptoms can take up to three days to appear and can last up to 7 days.

The FDA recommends that consumers, restaurants, and retailers search their inventory and freezers to throw out the recalled products and any related products if in doubt.

After removing the items, it is important to follow the FDA’s guidelines on how to clean hands and the impacted surfaces in order to prevent further illness.

Those who bought cantaloupe should check this list to see if they have been recalled. Even some mixed fruit items containing cantaloupe have been recalled.

We are still learning if there are more items that are linked to these outbreaks.

The FDA is continuing to monitor cantaloupe and products containing cantaloupe and expects to update its list as it receives more information.
